The Mighty "Thor" hits the big screen.
Director by Kenneth Branagh, starring Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Hopkins and Natalie Portman.
I was somewhat disappointed when i heard the plot of Thor had him cast out of Asgard and cursed to live amongst the humans on earth with none of his godly powers.
After having seen it.....yeah, still somewhat disappointed.
Thor is a colorful, special effects driven movie, as most summer and Marvel comic based films seem to be. The characters in the film are nothing more than caricatures. No real depth, nothing deep or important is said or done. There's a plot involving Ice Giants and a war that raged between them and Asgard that ended many years ago. There's another subplot involving Thor's brother Loki and his connection to the ice giants. Loki, if you know anything about the mythology of Thor, becomes his arch nemesis. But in the lagging, drawn out film, he takes forever to manifest into the vilain he is to be. By then, the interest has been lost. Chris Hemsworth does an adequate Job as the blow hard, Arrogant god of Thunder. Anthony Hopkins plays his usual superior father role, and Natalie Portman downgrades to play 'the girl' of the tale.
All in all it's an entertaining popcorn flick. But nothing of substance. We have to wait til the end of the film for him to regain his godly powers and his hammer before he kicks ass in the film's finale. By that point, its seen coming 2hrs earlier.
If you're a marvel fan, it's worth seeing so you can pick it apart. If you're not, it's worth seeing for some eye candy time killing. But wait for the DVD rental.
